Dr. Soumyabrata Choudhury

Dr. Soumyabrata Choudhury is an Associate Professor in the Theatre and Performance Studies programme at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). A scholar whose work spans theatre histories, performance theory, cultural studies, and the intersections of philosophy and politics, Dr. Soumyrabrata brings a deeply interdisciplinary perspective to the study of performance. He earned his Ph.D. in 1996 from the Centre of English and Linguistics (School of Languages), JNU, with a dissertation on the pragmatics of death and modes of individuation in the figures of Socrates, Antigone, and Jesus Christ. Before joining JNU, he served as Associate Professor at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta (2013–2014) and as Visiting Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi (2012–2013). His research and teaching explore the dynamic interplay between performance traditions and political thought, and he has contributed extensively to scholarship in her fields of expertise.
