Mashrur Arefin is a Bangladeshi banker, writer, and translator who serves as Managing Director & CEO of City Bank PLC and Chairman of the Association of Bankers Bangladesh (ABB). He began his career in 1995 as a Management Trainee at ANZ Grindlays Bank and went on to hold senior positions at Standard Chartered Qatar, American Express Bank, Citibank N.A., and Eastern Bank Ltd. Since joining City Bank in 2007, he has led its digital transformation, expanded small and micro-finance, and strengthened its communications and operations, culminating in his appointment as CEO in 2019. Alongside his banking career, Arefin is an acclaimed author and translator. His novel August Abchchaya won the Gemcon Shahitya Puroshkar in 2020, while his translations of Homer’s Iliad and Franz Kafka’s stories earned him the BRAC Bank-Samakal Literature Award. He holds an M.A. from the University of Dhaka and an MBA from Victoria University, Melbourne.
